Kitchen Gadgets and Water Play

On hot summer days, take your kitchen outdoors for cool water fun.

Items from your kitchen drawers and cupboards are an inexpensive way to spruce up water play.

First, ask your child to help you search through the kitchen cupboards and drawers for utensils and gadgets that can be used for pouring, squirting, mixing and scooping. This is a great time to use those odd items such as a turkey baster (great for squirting water), funnel (perfect for pouring) and whisk (best way to make bubbles). Keep in mind, as adults, we use kitchen utensils for specific cooking purposes, but children will find creative ways to use them when given the chance.

Be careful to stay away from glass items or ones with sharp edges. Use only utensils that are safe for a child to handle.

After you’ve chosen the items, you’ll need a large metal pot, metal pan or plastic bowl to hold water. Don’t forget the soap for extra fun making soap bubbles.

If you have a hose, you’re ready to head outdoors and fill the bowl with water. No access to a hose? Just fill the bowl before going out and remember an extra pitcher of water for refills.

Enjoy swishing, pouring and squirting water with your child. It’s a great way to cool down while sharing creative playtime with your child.
