Crayon shaving pictures

Make a sun catcher for your window. This activity requires adult supervision.

You'll need:
crayons (no outer paper on them)
vegetable peeler (the basic kind you hold in one hand)
wax paper
iron
towel

1.Take a piece of wax paper, roughly 6" long, and place it on the table.

2.Next, take a crayon and the vegetable peeler. Show your child how to peel the crayon as if it were a carrot. The shavings should fall onto the wax paper.

Your child might be able to do the peeling on his own, but make sure he's careful and isn't bringing the peeler too close to his hand.

Be sure to use a variety of colors.

3.Once your child is finished, turn your iron on warm.

4.While the iron is heating up, discuss what the crayon shavings look like. Talk about how an iron is hot. Wonder out loud what will happen when the crayons are heated up by the iron.

5.Now, fold the wax paper in half. Place it on a half of the towel. Fold the other half of the towel on the top of the wax paper. By having the wax paper surrounded by a towel, you will not get wax on your iron or your ironing board /kitchen table.

6. Iron the towel with the wax paper inside it. Soon, the crayons will melt inside the paper and you'll have a decoration for your window.
